What is a director ID?
A director identification number (director ID) is a unique 15-digit number issued by Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) to anyone who is a company director or intends to become one. You apply once, and you keep the same number for life – even if you change companies, change your name, move interstate or overseas, or stop being a director.
Who actually needs one?
You need a director ID if you’re a director of:
- An Australian company (Pty Ltd)
- A corporate trustee (for example, of a self-managed super fund (SMSF) or family trust)
- A registered Australian body or registered foreign company
- An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander corporation
If you’re running a business as a sole trader or partnership, you don’t need a director ID.
Why did the government introduce director IDs?
Director IDs are designed to clean up and protect the business environment. They help to:
- Prevent false or fraudulent director identities
- Make it easier for regulators to track a director’s involvement in multiple companies over time
- Crack down on illegal phoenix activity, where companies are wound up to avoid debts and then restarted under a new name with the same controllers
In short, it’s about transparency and accountability. The government wants a clear picture of who is actually running companies in Australia.
What happens if you don’t have one?
If you’re required to have a director ID and you don’t apply, you can be in breach of the Corporations Act 2001, and that can lead to civil and criminal penalties, including fines. It’s also an offence to apply for more than one director ID or to misrepresent your number.
So this isn’t just a paperwork exercise – it’s a compliance obligation.
