Recently announced JobKeeper payments

Yesterday’s announcement will provide support to those businesses that have been significantly impacted by the Coronavirus outbreak. The government will provide a temporary payment of $1,500 per fortnight per employee for up to 6 months. This will be passed on to employees in full and assist employers in maintaining their connection with employees so that businesses can resume operations quickly when this crisis is over. Eligible employers include:

  • Businesses with a turnover of less than $1bn where turnover has reduced by more than 30% to a comparable period a year ago (of at least a month)
  • Businesses with a turnover of $1bn or more where turnover has reduced by more than 50% relative to a comparable period a year ago (of at least a month)

Eligible employers must elect to participate in this scheme by submitting an application to the ATO and providing supporting documentation demonstrating a downturn in their business. Payment will be made for each eligible employee that was employed in the business at 1 March 2020 and continues to be engaged by said the employer.

In broad terms eligible employees are full time, part time or long term casuals who have been with their employer on a regular basis for a minimum of 12 months at 1 March 2020. It also applies to businesses without employees, such as the self-employed.

Payments will be made beginning the first week of May.
